Transit service will begin returning to normal this week while details of York Region’s promised free month for riders will be made clear.
Council made the pledge in December, knowing riders would have to be lured back following the strike, which lasted 97 days.
During that time, the region saved more than $7 million, most of which will be spent on making the entire YRT/Viva service free for 30 days.
The promise was reiterated by regional chairperson Bill Fisch Saturday afternoon, after 225 Miller Transit workers voted overwhelmingly to accept a new five-year deal.
Their new contract awards them a 16.55-per-cent wage increase over the term. A top-class operator will make $26 an hour in the final year.
The deal also includes important improvements to benefits and workers were relieved and ready to get back behind the wheel, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1587 president Ray Doyle said.
“They know now they can go back to work and they have a reasonable offer instead of the punitive one that was put before them,” he said Saturday.
Details of how service will be restored should come out this week.
The region has already pledged to have the 98 Yonge bus running Saturday, with the 55 Davis bus returning a week later.
Viva service and at least some of Miller’s routes in the region’s southeast should also start running Saturday.
Because they are virtually starting from scratch. Tokmakjian’s routes, in the region’s north, will take the longest to return to normal.
Its contract requires it to be at 100 per cent by the end of April, but YRT general manager Rick Leary told council last week he thinks the company can do it in about half the time.
Both Veolia and Miller have advertised for new drivers and mechanics in the past few weeks.
Tokmakjian’s website now has advertisements for several positions, including bus drivers, dispatchers and mechanics.
More than 90 workers for First Transit were left in limbo when the region terminated its contract with the company and Mr. Doyle has pledged to meet with Tokmakjian to get as many as possible hired.
The strike began Oct. 24, shutting down about 60 per cent of the region’s transit system, leaving more than 40,000 riders without service.

Winter Travel Suggestions

Install Winter Tires:

Winter tires are made with softer compound and unique design to provides better traction and handling during frost snow, slush and ice.
The tread pattern in a winter tire is also designed to maintain more contact with the pavement in adverse conditions.
Make sure your tires are properly inflated. Under-inflation or over-inflation can reduce the gripping action of tires.
It is important that all four tires have adequate tread.

Winter Maintenance Check-up:

Check windshield wiper blades to make sure they work properly and that the windshield wiper fluid reservoir is always full.
Have your mechanic test the anti-freeze/coolant to provide
the correct level of protection for your vehicle.

See and be seen:

Remove snow and ice from all vehicle windows, lights, turn signals and top of vehicle.
Buckle up.
Turn on your headlights.
Turn off cruise control. The only way to stop wheel-spin and
maintain control of a skidding vehicle is to reduce power immediately. Disengaging cruise control will take too much time.

Plan your route:

Share your travel plans so others.
Leave yourself enough time to reach your destination safely.
Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly and gradually – avoid quick starts, stops and fast turns.
Go slowly! It takes four times the distance to stop at 50 km/h as it does at 25 km/h.
Maintain a safe following distance.
Beware of BLACK ICE! Curves, intersections, off-ramps, bridges and shady areas are common areas for black ice.
Don't overestimate the abilities of your vehicle! 4-wheel drive are not better than 2-wheel drive in stopping and turning in winter road conditions.

What to do if you skid:

Look where you want your vehicle to go and steer your
vehicle in this direction.
DO NOT BRAKE!
DO NOT ACCELERATE!
Stop the driving force on the wheels by:
- Shifting to neutral in automatic transmission vehicles.
- Declutching in standards transmission vehicles.

What you should do if a collison occurs:

Click on the Collision Reporting Centre link for information
about when a driver should report a motor vehicle collision
at a centre and what steps need to be taken when a collision
occurs.

Snow Plows:

Drive a safe distance behind the plow. You may see them, but
they may not see you if you are following too closely.
Only pass snow removal vehicles when a safe passing areas is
available, that is clear of snow and treated with salt and sand.
Do not pass on the right.
Watch for the plow and blade when passing snow plows.
They may be obscured by snow and cleared debris.
Don't travel beside a snow plow. They can shift sideways after
hitting snow packs or drifts.
When approaching an oncoming snow plow, reduce speed
and move to the right side of the road if safe to do so.
Plows cannot stop quickly. Do not pass too closely in front.
Plows can create temporary white-out conditions with swirling
snow. Safely pull to the side or slow down in these conditions.

When is a highway not a highway?

Here’s a question for you – when you hear the word highway, what comes to mind? Like most, you probably think of a lot of traffic moving at high speed along a roadway that is designed purely to get you from one place to another as quickly as possible. There may be the occasional stop along the way, but highway stops tend to be more functional than appealing destinations in and of themselves.

A highway is for vehicles, large and small – but typically, not a great place for people.
A highway probably doesn’t bring to mind a welcoming, human-scaled streetscape, where people feel comfortable strolling along wide, beautifully-landscaped sidewalks and boulevards. Most highways don’t offer attractive shopping destinations, with store-fronts and restaurants near the sidewalk.
So why the question? Highway 7 is evolving and we want your thoughts and ideas about changing its name to something that better reflects its future.

Highway 7 is one of the most important roads in York Region and is the connector between urban areas in three of our municipalities. It stretches from Highway 50 in the west, across Vaughan and Richmond Hill to east of Donald Cousens Parkway in Markham. And certainly, in the past Highway 7 was all those things associated with the word “highway” – it carried a lot of traffic, and wasn’t designed to be a comfortable, attractive destination for pedestrians or local residents.

But change is coming quickly to Highway 7, and in the not-too-distant future there will be many sections of Highway 7 where people will want to shop, dine and relax. It’s all part of a larger plan – York Region is planning a system of regional centres and corridors, which follow the Province of Ontario’s Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe. The vivaNext plan for rapidways and great transit connections along Highway 7 is also a big part of the change, with construction already underway for wide, welcoming boulevards and beautiful transit stations.

So, York Region is looking for suggestions for re-naming Highway 7. Considering the future transformation of Highway 7, what do you think it should be called?

– Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 7,542 sales through the TorontoMLS® system in August – a 24 per cent increase over 6,083 sales in August 2010. New listings, at 12,509, were up by 20 per cent compared to August 2010. Market conditions remained tight as sales growth outstripped growth in new listings. "Home sales in the GTA have stood up well despite a less certain economic outlook," said Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver. "Home sales will be bolstered by low mortgage rates moving forward. The Bank of Canada is expected to be on the sidelines until the second half of 2012 or even into 2013. However, home ownership affordability in the City of Toronto could be further improved with the removal of the City’s land transfer tax. This tax currently represents a substantial upfront cost for home buyers.” With market conditions remaining tight in the GTA, the average selling price continued to grow strongly in August – up by more than 10 per cent year-over-year to $451,663. "We remain on pace for the second best year on record for sales. Approximately 90,000 transactions are expected by the end of December," said TREB's Senior Manager of Market Analysis Jason Mercer. "Major home ownership costs, including the average monthly mortgage payment, remain affordable despite the strong price growth experienced so far this year."

Time to start work on that fall garden

Mid- to late-summer is the ideal time to start a fall garden, or a “second season” crop of your favourite cool-season vegetables and flowers, according to Renee Shepherd of Renee’s Garden and the non-profit Home Garden Seed Association.

What to grow
Even where winters are cold and the ground freezes hard, many vegetables can still be grown to maturity before first frost. For edibles, try beets, cilantro, lettuce, radish, spinach, kale, peas, salad greens, Swiss chard, broccoli, carrots, cabbage, onions, leeks, parsley and arugula. When choosing varieties, select ones that are fast-maturing to ensure a harvest before cold weather hits.
Seeds of annual flowers that thrive in cool weather can also be sown now for fall and spring bloom, including alyssum, candytuft, calendula, stock and sweet peas.

When to start
The key to growing vegetables for fall harvest is timing. Vegetables grown in this season need about 14 extra days to mature compared with spring-seeded crops due to fall’s shorter days, cooling soil, and less intense sunshine. When deciding the date to start your veggies, first determine your average first frost date. Then look at the seed packet for days to maturity. Add 14 days to that number, then use that figure to calculate back to seed-starting date.

Growing on
Sowing seeds or setting out transplants in midsummer can be more stressful to young plants than seeding during cooler, often wetter spring weather. Keep the soil moist as seeds are germinating.
Protect young seedlings with shade cloth or plant them near taller plants, such as corn or tomatoes to provide shade from the hot afternoon sun. Another option is to start seeds in containers in a spot with bright light and then transplant young seedlings into the garden. This works well for crops like lettuce and spinach, whose seeds don’t germinate as well when soil temperatures are high.

Fall harvest
With a little effort in late summer, you’ll eat well in fall because crops such as kale, lettuce, spinach, and broccoli thrive in the lower temperatures.

What is 'The Smith Manoeuvre' and how is it applicable in the Real Estate marketplace.

The Smith Manoeuvre is a strategy that Fraser Smith developed as a financial planner and then wrote a book about it in 2002. Its basic premise is to make your mortgage tax deductible, but it can do so much more for your personal finances than just that.

Most of us have not heard about a tax deductible mortgage before. Who would not like to make the home mortgage tax deductible? Not many of us...so read on and learn how.

The tax rule being taken advantage of here is that Canadians can deduct the interest on loans that are to invest in income generating investments. If you take a loan to buy a rental property or even stocks, the interest on that loan is tax deductible.

With the lovely warm weather finally upon us, we're spending more time outdoors. We pull out the sunscreen, hat and sunglasses and head outside for some fun in the sun. But, what about our furry friends? It's easy to forget that our pets also need extra care in the heat of the summer.

Heatstroke In Pets.
Dogs can overexert themselves when they are playing and running. They can's sweat like people do so they pant instead. In hot weather, they need to take some breaks to cool down. Create a rest spot for your pet that contains a cool shady area and some water to drink. Make sure the water is fresh and cool by bringing along a cooler lined with ice. Signs of heatstroke include rapid panting, muscle twitches, whining and a dazed look.

Pets in Cars.
Leaving the window open a crack on a hot day while running a quick errand can be a death sentence. The heat in a car can soar in just a few single minutes. Take them with you instead and tie their leash near an area that is shady.

Clipping Fur.
Heavy, thick, or long fur needs to be clipped. This helps regulate your pet's body temperature. There are many mobile services that will come to you if you don't have time to do this yourself or are worried about cutting your pet's skin.

Sunburn.
Pets with white coats, pink skin, and newly cut fur are the most susceptible to the sun's rays. Keep their exposure limited.

Fleas and Ticks.
Those nasty little bugs thrive in summer weeks and grass. Use a flea collar or talk to your veterinarian for another solution. Checking your pet's skin on a regular basis will stop these hitchhikers from having their own summer picnic.

When it comes to pet safety, taking the necessary precautions will ensure a safe and enjoyable summer.

Hot hue: Blue both sporty and formal

Blue is back.

This spring, blue is coming on strong in home decor. It’s in shelter magazines. It’s on catalogue covers. It’s being hawked by HGTV’s Sabrina Soto in TV ads for Target.

Especially hot is a deep, near navy blue — the blue of the flag, say, or of a ginger jar. Often used in combination with white, it’s crisp, classic and oh-so-American.

I think it’s very sophisticated and classy,” said Christine Haught, a Bath Township interior designer. “It’s got a very polished look about it.”

Dark blue has long been a staple of traditional design, but this time around it’s sporting some updated pizzazz. It’s showing up in classic motifs that have been exaggerated to give them a fresh look, for example, as well as in ethnic patterns and contemporary shapes.

The colour has the unusual property of feeling both sporty and formal at the same time, said Mark Woodman, an interior designer and consultant who is president of the Color Marketing Group, a colour forecasting organization. Deep blue is associated with the Navy and orderliness, but it also conveys the relaxed attitude of a beach cottage.

Haught called it “country-club-esque, but not too stodgy and not too stiff.” Think of a blue blazer with khaki pants — dressy, but in a casual way.

Woodman is using the hue in a home he’s currently decorating. He’s painting it on the walls below a bedroom chair rail and using it as an accent colour and a colour in fabric prints. He’s even considering putting it on a bathroom ceiling.

Haught and Lisa Cregan, author of a new book devoted to blue, suspect the renewed popularity of deep blue may be related to the patriotic wave the country is riding, although Cregan believes the association is subconscious. Or it might be due to our economic instability, which tends to bring traditional, familiar styles to the forefront — styles that often feature blue.

Tough times also have us craving stress relief, and blue is known for its calming properties, noted Cregan, who wrote Blue: 350 Inspiring Ways to Decorate with Blue for House Beautiful magazine.

What’s more, deep blue is a colour that appeals to both genders. “It doesn’t feel too sweet, and it doesn’t feel too masculine,” she said.

Maybe its greatest attribute is the way it plays well with other colours, Woodman said.
Dark blue works with yellow, as it also pairs well as the colour that falls opposite blue on the colour wheel, orange, he said. It goes with deep terra cotta, aubergine and deep red. It’s a way to freshen what Woodman called “the Starbucks colours” — sage, Tuscan gold and roasted red pepper.

It goes with grey and even black, a look that’s becoming popular in fashion, Haught noted.
That kind of versatility is true of all blues, not just dark blue, Haught said. Because blue is common in nature, it tends to acts as a neutral — “bluetral,” she jokingly coined it.

“I mean, the sky goes with everything,” she said.

Blue even works well with itself, Haught noted — that is, almost all shades of blue look good with one another. It’s a quality that doesn’t hold true for every colour, she said, notably red and its tinted form, pink.

Blue always ranks high when people are asked their favourite colours, Woodman said, yet the colour waxes and wanes in popularity in the home. He said that’s because people tend to use grayed-down hues instead of crisp, clean versions of blue. “All of a sudden it becomes a little depressing,” he said.
While dark blue is a current decorating darling, other blues are popular, too, Cregan said. Bright Moroccan blue is part of the current trend toward exotic decor. Turquoise is hot, especially when it’s paired with orange or darker blues.

Cregan’s book is covered in a slightly iridescent blue fabric reminiscent of Caribbean waters. It’s a happy colour, one that Cregan said works well with silver. “It feels very modern,” she said.
She’s seeing other contemporary twists on what is often considered a traditional colour. She pointed out a bedroom featured in her book, in which designer Steven Gambrel set watery, light-blue shades of blue against dark wood furniture with simple, somewhat masculine forms.

Other designers are choosing to use blue with lacquer finishes, either on walls or on the insides of bookshelves to bring reflectiveness to what would otherwise be a dark space, she said.

Cregan thinks blue will continue to find its way into homes.

“People are much braver about putting their own personality out there,” she said. They’re much more likely than in the past to decorate their homes with what they like rather than what’s in style.

And what many of them like is blue.
